Tom Cruise, Scientologist

January 27, 2008

Hey friends, check out this video. It is footage from 2005 when Tom Cruise won the Medal of Valor award from the church of Scientology. (think Oscars/Academy Awards lifetime achievement award).

Listen to the language/themes he introduces:

  1. The idea of purifying the movement, you are either in or you are out. No spectators here please.
  2. His call to help others and that it is what a good Scientologists does.
  3. To inject their ethics into others

He also introduces to acronyms: KSW (Keep Scientology Working) and SP’s (suppressive people).

Here are a couple of quotes:

  1. “We [the Scientologists] are the authorities on the mind. … We are the way to happiness.”
  2. “If you are a Scientologist, you see things the way they are, in all their glory, in all their complexity.”
  3. “When you’re a Scientologist, and you drive by an accident, you know you have to do something about it … you’re the only one who can really help.”

Overall, it is a scary video. It is just another piece of evidence that shows that there is a battle for idealogies, for the origins of things, for the prescription to what ails us and the proposed solutions. For Scientologists, it is the ‘Keep Scientology Working’ plan which is their comprehensive strategy for Scientology to dominate the world.

While I think Scientology is crazy, I am also mindful that there are many who see little to no difference between Scientologists and other faiths, including Christianity. We need to always be aware of how people might view our story, the biblical account. Remember, “the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing”

Here are several things that are necessary for us to make our story clear:

  1. Know and present the true gospel of grace and trusting in the work of Christ, rather than presenting the law in the guise of the gospel. Check out this article on The Centrality of the Gospel by Tim Keller)
  2. Know the biblical story of creation, fall, redemption and restoration. Among others, I would recommend The Drama of Scripture by Michael Goheen
  3. Walk alongside others as they consider the claims of Christianity, being prepared to humbly give answers for the hope that we have. Check out Questioning Evangelism by Randy Newman
  4. Because these things are spiritually discerned, we must always pray that God would reveal Himself to them through Christ.
  5. Know the beliefs of other faiths and worldviews so that you can spot them and discuss them.

As always, feel free to post your thoughts or add some book/resource recommendations.
